200 or,,,,,,,,, BUST!!!
Penn 14/0 line capacity is 750 yards of 130(.044) 200lb is 1.7mm= .0669 inchs if u run the specs through any line calculator it comes out to 305 yards
Penn 16/0 rated at 1000 yards of 130(.044) 200lb is. 0669 run the numbers and u get 407
Same deal with the 130 u get 519
Not saying there no place for a reel spooled with 200lb but spooling all of ur reels with it might be a little over kill.
Well bullbusters 200 is thicker than most other companies. LP is only 1.4mm and I can tell you that I have seen Will from Shark Fevers reels in action and he dropped 200-250yds out and still had just over a half spool on his 16/0.
He would have a little over half spool on a 16/0 with a 200 yard drop. Half of the 407 yard capacity is 203.5 so if he made 200 yard drop he would have a half spool plus 3.5 yard.
Everyone seems to be missing my point. Most people would have no advantage of fishing 200 lb over 130!
Most people could not stand and break 130 in a clean shot. Also having a reel with a Smooth drag on in the higher drag settings u will tend to break off less fish some of the senators drags pulse when in lock and it can result in lost fish.
Again I'm also not saying there is no place for a rod with 200 lb mono but far more often than not 130 will be better suited.

I think you are missing the point, "most people" dont target 14ft plus sharks. This thread merely stated that your chance for success if GREATLY increased on monster sharks if you switch from 130 to 200 as over time 130 will fray faster and give out, Not to mention if you rub on a sandbar 130 is more likely to pop. And I have broke 130 numerous times on my everols so yes it can and will break.
And by just over a half spool im not talking 3yds of line......I can see a 16/0 holding 600-650yds of straight 200 mono packed tight as they say they hold 1000yds of 130 mono yet I have seen 1300yds on one (I used to have one).
I'm not trying to derail the tread, but I'm curious. How much time on the beach do you guys give your line before you switch it out? Or..... Do you change it out after a disappointing inspection or loss? I'd like an idea of how long 130-200 mono and/or braid will last on a beach.
I think the best way to do it is to spool your reels with braid with a mono top shot. Braided line gets frayed fairly easy and doesn't do well in just sitting and rolling in the sand but it increases your line capacity almost double. So how I spool up is figure out how far your your longest drops are going to be and make sure you have enough mono to cover that distance. For instance if the longest drops you make are 300 yards you use a top shot 350 yards long andspool the rest of your reel with braid of the same lb test as your mono. This gives you optimum streght and yardage and when you need to replace someline it will only be your topshot. A few hundred yards of mono is cheap so you can replace it as soon u see anything wrong with it.
when using 200 lb test line you can have your buddies tie a rope to your harness or hold onto you any way they can ONCE THE 200 LB TEST IS ALL GONE FROM THE SPOOL AND TURN THE BEAST ,,,,,,the 200 lb test is incredibly difficult to break even by the largest of sharks .It will stretch and put a ton of pressure on the anglers and his budiies but if you can hang on then chances are you can turn your monster and begin to regain your line back.
I've heard of the spools on senators warping and breaking under pressure like that. Also most reels aren't made to be placed under 100lb+ pressure with the exception of some of the new lever drag reels, sounds risky at best.

You are correct; however, there is a few hammers that were landed just like this....just have to weigh out if its worth it to you or not

I'll risk breaking a reel on a fish of a lifetime, or extremely large fish anyday!
Im here to test myself and tackle's limits every chance I get. ![]()
one of these times some one is going to see a reel seat or reel foot break and watch the reel get pulled right thru all the guides and out to sea.
trashing the pool and loosing the reel
Jonathan's 11'8" in last year's BHC. Reel foot broke and rod flew through the ocean and the fish was running, luckily he was harnessed into the reel.

You know... I didnt even consider that!
Just saw that in my head,
THAT WOULD BE NUTS! I think Id just stand there in amazement like WTF?!
can someone shed some light for me...
the area i fish is a gradual transition no real big bars or drop offs(except shipping channels) no real oyster beds or rocks.
reel: alutecnos 50w 2 speed. both have the l.r.s cam.
i already have a 3lb spool of 130lb mono(im aware your directing towards 200lb)
i was really looking at spooling my reels with a 200lb jb hollow(500yds) and splicing in a 130lb top shot. how many yards do u think i will get of the 130.
im in no way targeting 10ft plus shark but really trying to maxamize what the capabilities of my reels are.
i had thought about going 200 and would buy spool but is it really going to be worth it? will it decrease hookups at all on smaller sharks since they could potentiall see it.? i was also a litle worried about how much 200lb mono i would get.. if i could get 300 or so yards and still have 500 yards of backing i wouldnt be as worried.
so what say you.
